About me

Greetings, I am Deon, the founder of the NerdySoccerGuy channel. Originating from West Virginia, where soccer is not widely embraced, I embarked on a mission to cultivate a community passionate about Major League Soccer (MLS) and the sport itself. My journey into soccer fandom began in 2010, catalyzed by the electrifying atmosphere of the FIFA World Cup that year. Witnessing the spectacle, I found myself drawn into the beautiful game, initially rooting for the US team and after they were eliminated I later cheered for Spain.

Post-World Cup, I embarked on a quest to align myself with a club. Intrigued by my familial ties to Scotland, I found resonance with Celtic FC. Subsequently, my focus turned towards MLS in 2016, fueled by a desire to contribute to its growth and accessibility. Opting to support a nascent franchise, I deliberated between Minnesota United and Atlanta United. The allure of attending matches in Atlanta influenced my decision to pledge allegiance to Atlanta United.

Though my competitive soccer aspirations remained unfulfilled, I reveled in the camaraderie and joy of participating in recreational leagues for two seasons before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, I honed my skills as a center back and later transitioned to a striker role, assuming the mantle of a false 9 to bolster our team's attacking prowess.

In 2021, my passion for the sport led me to venture into coaching, where I served as an assistant coach for a local high school team for two seasons. However, driven by a desire to pursue further education, I made the decision to return to college to complete my degree. It was in 2022 that I fully immersed myself in the NerdySoccerGuy endeavor, committed to providing consistent coverage of MLS and fostering a vibrant community of soccer enthusiasts.
